Mr and Mrs A. K. Firth and Miss Barbara Firth will leave Christchurch on December 16 to join the Dominion Monarch for England. In Sydney they will visit their daughter. Miss Nora Firth, and in Melbourne their son, Mr John fcirth.
Mr and Mrs W. A. Smith will leave Christchurch on Friday for Wellington where they will make their home. Mr Smith, who has been manager of the Christchurch branch of the Union Steam Ship Company for the last six years, will take up the position of branch manager of the company in Wellington. Mrs J. N. Matson, who has . been spending some months In Christchurch, will leave on Friday by air on the first stage of her return journey to her home in the Gold Coast. West Africa. Her father, Mr A. F. Wright (Cashmere), will accompany her as far as Sydney. Mr J. B. Crawford find Mrs Crawford (Edinburgh) arrived in Christchurch yesterday for a few days’ visit. Mr Crawford has been treasurer of the Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh, since 19x2. Mr and Mrs Richard B. Taylor and their two children, who returned to New Zealand by the Dominion Monarch a few days ago, will arrive in Christchurch today to visit Mr Taylor’s mother, Mrs Basil Taylor, Monck’s Bay. Mr Taylor has been overseas for six years, first in Washington as secretary to Sir Carl Berendsen, and recently as private secretary to Sir Fredirck Doiage in London. At the annual meeting of the Pfipanui Women’s Christian Temperance Union officers were elected as follows: president, Mrs Neville; secretary, Mrs Hodder; treasurer, Mrs Coley. It was reported that seven patients at the Mental Hospital were visited during the month by Mrs Karst and Mrs Neville, and a collection was taken up tc. provide Christmas comforts for patients.
There was an attendance of 36 members at the monthly meeting of the women’s section of the Air Force Association when Dr. H. R. Donald, chairman of the Aged Peoples’ Welfare Council, gave an interesting address. Dr. Donald described the three different types'of persons with whose welfare his council was so deeply concerned—the aged, the aged and frail, and the aged and infirm. He said that loneliness was the main factor to be combatted. At the moment, he said there was still a great deal of organising to be done regarding the council’s work but when this was completed there would be many ways in which voluntary help could be utilised. Miss M. Aston thanked Dr. Donald for his talk and assured him that, when the time came, the women’s section would be ready and willing to do everything possible to assist in this work.
