FINAL DAY OF N.Z. CUP MEETING
TROTTING
Gold Horizon Selected To Beat Trotters
JOHNNY GLOBE SHOULD WIN FREE-FOR-ALL
The appearance of Gold Horizon, Dictation, Vodka, and Highland Kilt in the New Zealand Trotting Free-for-all, and Johnny Globe, Adorian, and Van Dieman in the New Zealand Pacing Championship will be the highlights of the final day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's meeting at Addington tomorrow. Gold Horizon has made only one appearance so far at the meeting, and in that he finished on for second behind Vodka in the Dominion Trotting Handicap. He has drawn wide out in the New Zealand Trotting Free-for-all tomorrow, but this should not stop him from winning. The Quite Sure gelding is particularly smart over one mile and five furlongs, and it would not surprise to see him break Dictation’s record for the distance of 3min 27sec. Gold Horizon has been placed in 3min 27 4-ssec. Most opposition to Gold Horizon may come, from the rapidly improving Dictation. The Josedale Dictator gelding had appearently missed a fair amount of work before the meeting, and in his first two appearances he looked very big in condition. He improved considerably before last Saturday, when he gained an outstanding win in the Greyhound Handicap, after racing wide out most of the way. Dictation is now the holder of seven New Zealand and Australian records, and it will be surprising if he fails to give a good account of himself here. Vodka, fifth in the Greyhound Handicap last week, has not run a bad race at the meeting. He was second at his two appearances on the first day of the meeting and then won the Dominion Trotting Handicap in decisive style. The Logan Derby six-year-old is the youngest horse in the race and he should extend his record. He has drawn the second line and this should assist him to begin better than if he had drawn the middle of the field.
Highland Kilt has been a disappointment since he won the Worthy Queen Handicap on the first day of the meeting. However, he finished close to the leaders in last week’s race and should be prominent here. Correction finished a good second to Dictation last Saturday, but she is at a disadvantage in the handicaps under free-for-all conditions. Nevertheless, she may show up. Barrier Reef is not racing with his old dash, but he could show up, as could Precaution. Swanee River and Sure Charge. However, Gold Horizon, Dictation and Vodka stand out and they should dispute the finish of what should be a memorable race.
Johnny Globe will be strongly supported to make amends for his defeat in the Ollivier Free-for-all last "Week when he parades in the New Zealand Pacing Championship. The Logan Derby stallion has been racing ‘with all his old dash, but unfortunately he has not had any luck in distance races. It should be a different story tomorrow as he has drawn No. 4 and this should enable him to get to the front, or if his driver prefers, into a handy position in the first furlong. With a reasonable run he should win his third race at the meeting. The New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, Adorian, has chased Johnny Globe home in two free-for-alls since then. He may be better suited by the longer journey tomorrow and should be the hardest for Johnny Globe to beat. Van Dieman’s performance to win last Saturday was a grand one and if Johnny Globe makes any mistakes tomorrow, Van Dieman could easily win again. He is right back to the outstanding form he showed last season. Single Direct and Vedette have raced well and with Maori Home they make most appeal of the remainder. The Double Races Merval marred her performance in the Australasian Handicap last week by breaking at the start, but she may make amends in the Smithson Handicap, the first leg of the double, tomorrow. The U. Scott mare showed tremendous speed last week when she finished on well for fifth without ever appearing likely to catch those in front of her. She will only need to begin reasonably well tomorrow to win again. Ohio has not run a bad race at the meeting, and in his present form his chances are highly regarded. The halfbrother to Young Charles is a grand stayer, and it will be surprising if he fails to reach a place. Forward won decisively last week, but he looked very sore on pulling up. If he has recovered sufficiently, his chances will have to be respected. The halfbrotner to Adorian is handily placed cn
12 yards and could easily win again. The Auckland stables of V. L. Mackie will be represented by. Dawnlight and First Victory, and of the pair the latter makes most appeal. He won well last week and off the front he will again have bright prospects. He is a very fit horse at present and seems to have improved with every race. Dawnlight has not run a bad race at the meeting, and she may
Gay Lyric is the problem horse. If he is allowed to get to the front early and make his own rules, he will take catching. If, as was the case last week, another horse goes with him early, his chances will not be so bright. Imperial Trust and White Angel are two capable pacers on their day, and they may do best of the others. An unwieldy field of 16 is carded for the second leg of the double, the Flying Mile Handicap. Prince Charming, a winner at his two appearances at the meeting, has apparently become solid, and he can be relied on to race well off the front. He will be bracketed with Curiosity, a smart beginner, which could also race well. Roschana has raced solidly at the meeting. and this U. Scott mare should appreciate the mile journey here. She is usually most reliable at the barrier, a deciding factor at the awkward mile starting point. . Safeguard is another smart beginner, and she appears to be near her best again. The Springfield Globe mare finished a good third in her race last week, and a repetition of that effort would give her a chance here.
Valour has raced poorly at his two appearances so far at the meeting, and he would have to show marked improvement to have a chance. He is the one most likely to cause an upset. Punt and Diamed make most* appeal of the remainder. The Minor Races W.-R, Butt will parade a strong bracket in the Churchill Handicap in Spring Edition and Moss Hall, both of which are at their best at present. Spring Edition finished a useful third behind Prince Charming and Defiance in a similar race last week, and with them out of the way she will have prospects of gaining her first win for the season. Magellan is a grand staying son of Andy Derby, and he is due for a win. The smaller field tomorrow will be in his favour. Excelsa. Black Wings, Bronze Indian, and Lady Balfour should do best of the others. A real problem faces investors in the Utility Handicap, which has drawn a poor field of improving trotters. Battle Cry is meeting a much poorer field than he did earlier at the meeting, and he could easily make amends for. his poor dis-, plays then. He will be bracketed with the speedy but unreliable Fingal’s Cave. Ingenuity is a solid if not spectacular | trotter, and his solidity may earn an-1 other placing for him. Ecosse and Quick Silver will form a useful bracket, and the best of the remainder may be Redale, Battle Royal, Sabre Dance, and Concord. Roschana, a good fourth in the Le Lievre Handicap last week, is favoured m the Harold Logan Handicap. The U. Scott mare has had only three starts this season, and she has been prominent in them all. On her day she is more than useful, and it will be surprising if she falls to show up. Defendant has not had much luck in her races so far at the meeting. Her efforts suggest that she is near winning form,'and she may be the hardest for Roschana to beat. His Majesty, Battleground, and Punt are others likely to show up. Sally Walla, an unlucky second to Scottish Note on the second day of the meeting, may gain a well-deserved win in the Shirley Handicap. The Bruce Walla mare is very fit at present, and she should at least be placed. r, Kuhla has raced consistently in recent weeks, and another placing may not be beyond him. Bounden Duty, Young Sam, King’s -Order, and Rola Veyor should do best of the others. HORORATA TROTTING CLUB.
