N.Z. ENTRY IN DAVIS CUP CONTEST
TEAM TO PLAY NEXT YEAR IN EUROPEAN ZONE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. A New Zealand three-man team will be entered in the 1954 Davis Cup competition in the European zone. The council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association decided tonight that the team will comprise J. E. Robson, who is at present overseas, and two others to be selected in New Zealand. Besides playing in the European zone of the cup, the team will take part in tournaments on the Continent and in England.
The last New Zealand team to play in the Davis Cup was in 1947, when the team comprised Robson, R. S. McKenzie, J. A. Barry, and D. C. Coombe (nonplaying captain). There was only minor opposition to the move to enter the team, most delegates agreeing with the lead given by the chairman (Mr A. H. Richards), the secretary (Mr A. C. W. Mantell-Harding), and the former national champion, Mr R. S. McKenzie.
