EFFECT OF WAGE INCREASE
OF MR F. P. WALSH (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 24. Mr F. P.. Walsh, president of the Federation of Labour, and workers’ advocate in the Court of Arbitration, believes that industry can in the main “carry” the recent wage increase by adopting more efficient methods of production.
“Employers are under an obligation to the country to do so,” he said in Auckland today, just before he’left by air to attend a conference of the executive board of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions in Brussels. Mr Walsh is satisfied that the decision will bring a better relationship in industry between employers and employees and will result in increased production. He sees no way in which the standard of living of New Zealanders can be maintained or increased other than by increased production.
Mr Walsh will represent Australia and New Zealand at the executive board meeting of the I.C.F.T.U. from December 1 to 4. He intends to “have a look at the trade union movement in England.” -
