City Council Committees
There is cause for satisfaction that the two sides of the new Christchurch City Council have reached agreement on the constitution and personnel of the standing committees. The effectiveness of the committee work might have been seriously jeopardised if the Labour councillors had persisted, id spite of their reduced. representation on the council, with their proposal to increase their proportion of seats on the committees. As it is, the strengthened Citizens’ Association representation on the council should be able to play its full part in securing efficient-administration for the city. There is only one obvious objection to the committee lists approved on Monday evening. Mr J. Shankland, who is secretary of
the General Labourers* Union, would have been wiser not to accept a, seat on the water supply and works committee, the committee most concerned in industrial negotiations with this union. Mr Shankland may find his interest as»an employer in conflict with his interest as an advocate and representative of his union. That is a situation that every council and councillor should seek to avoid.
