e ‘ TUESDAY (Before Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M*) FALSE PRETENCES Thomas Gardiner Campbell, a labourer, aged 36, pleaded guilty to a charge that on November. 21, with .intent to defraud, he obtained from Zadok Smith the sum of £2 2s in money by falsely representing a cheque for £lO to be a good and valid order. He was sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for three months.

Detective-Sergeant G. W. Alty said that Campbell had appeared on October 5 on a charge of being an incorrigible rogue. He was to have appeared again in six months if called on and during that time he was to stay in the Salvation Army Home. While in the home he found a cheque book, wrote a cheque and obtained a sum of money from Smith who later became z suspicious and went to the police. “I was under the influence of liquor at the time and I think the best place to put me is on the island where I can pull myself together.” said Campbell. The Magistrate said that Campbell had no previous convictions on liquor charges. "We will put you away for a while as you keep getting into these troubles,” said the Magistrate.

A man whose name was ordered not to be published in the meantime was remanded to December 14, on a charge that on November 15 he stole two 25-foot lengths of rope of a total value of £1 17s 6d. Bail was allowed in accused’s own recognisance of £2O, with one surety of £2O, on condition that he reports daily to the police. Alexander Sinclair, a baker, was remanded to November 30 on a charge that on September 12 at Christchurch, he stole a four-light door and a frame-ledge door of a total value of £B, the property of Colin James Grimwood. Bail was renewed.

Lancelot Ural Milner, aged 34, a carpet layer, was remanded to November 80 on a charge that on November 20, at Christchurch, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Ernest Cordery, Ltd., the sum of £l6 8s in money by falsely representing a cheque as a good and valid order.

Detective-Sergeant Alty prosecuted and applied for the remand. Mr H. S. Thomas appeared for accused and asked for suppression of his name. "There are two other charges pending and accused is known to us,” said Detec-tive-Sergeant Alty. The Magistrate refused to suppress accused’s name but allowed bail in his own recognisance of £5O with one surety of £lOO on condition that he reports daily to the police. A man, aged 26, whose name was ordered not to be published, was remanded to December 1 on a charge that on November 17 he attempted -to suicide.

Mr A. Hearn asked for bail for the accused, which was allowed at £5O in his owrf recognisance with one surety of providing he reports daily to the police. CHARGE OF SHIP DESERTION Peter Sugans, aged 28. a ship’s steward, was remanded to November 30, on a charge that on January 27, 1951, at Wellington, he deserted from the British ship Rangitane. Bail was allowed in Hfs own recognisance of £5O. FINES FOR DRUNKENNESS

James William OHey, aged 54, a labourer, pleaded guilty to a charge that on November 23 he was .found drunk in a public place having been once before convicted of a similar offence in the last six months.

He was convicted and fined £2 in default four days’ imprisonment. NO DEALER’S LICENCE On a charge of carrying on a business as a second-hand dealer between June 1 and November 17, not being the holder of a second-hand dealer’s licence, British Typewriters, Ltd., was , convicted and fined £2.
