UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFIT
Sir,—Can any of your readers inform me how unemployment benefit is calculated for a single man or woman. Is it a certain percentage of salary received immediately before unemployment, or is it a fixed amount for everyone; capabilities or age etc., ignored? I have heard a single person may have a private income of 30s a week and still receive some benefit during unemployment.—Yours, etc., PUZZLED. October 28, 1953.
[“lf the correspondent would call at the office of the department I would be pleased to explain the procedure,” said the Registrar of the Social Security Department (Mr E. A. Selman) commenting on this letter. “There are certain difficulties in the benefits applicable and a better explanation could be given at a personal interview.”]
