“FLYING STILETTO.”—This X-3 research plane of the United States Air Force was built to test features of an aircraft operating for sustained periods at extremely high speeds. Because of its short wings and long tapered nose, the X-3 has been nicknamed the “Flying Stiletto.” The fuselage is 66ft 9in long, but the wing span is only’ 22ft Sin.
