WESLEY LODGE

GARDEN PARTY HELD A garden party organised as a thanksgiving to celebrate the first birthday of Wesley Lodge, an eventide home opened in Park terrace a year ago, was held on Saturday. The many who attended enjoyed the beauty of the grounds at the lodge and liberally patronised - the well-stocked stalls.

The party was officially opened by the Rev. Ashleigh Fetch, and a programme of spirited music was -played by the Christchurch Municipal Band. A society to be known as the Friends of Wesley Lodge was inaugurated at the party, and it promises to be well supported. The members will do all they can to further the interests of the home, which is accommodating 17 elderly women and 13 men, including one married couple. The following were the stalls and stall-holders: tea, Mrs W. E. Falkingham and helpers; work, Central Mission Ladies’ Guild; ice cream and sweets, Sister Evelyn and helpers; Wesley Lodge stall, on which all the goods were made or given by residents at the lodge or their friends, Matron Borrows. The men of the church conducted many exciting and entertaining side shows.

ST. MARGARET’S COLLEGE

OLD GIRLS’ REUNION

To celebrate St. Margaret’s Day. members of St. Margaret’s College Old Girls’ Association annually attend a programme of religious and social gatherings. This year, to avoid the busy time df Show weekend, the social functions were held this weekend. There were record attendances at all functions.

On Sunday, November 15—the eve of St. Margaret’s Day—more than GO members attended evensong at St. Mary’s Church, Merivale. The Ven. Archdeacon W. W. Averill, the school chaplain, conducted the service. On St. Margaret’s Day, many old girls attended a founders’ day service conducted by Archdeacon Averill at St. Margaret’s College. This weekend, the reunion celebrations were continued. On Saturday morning, at St. Mary’s Church, Merivale, about 70 members* attended a Communion service conducted by Archdeacon Averill, assisted by the Rev. Canon A. H. Norris. At morning tea in the parish hall afterwards, the president (Mrs N. Morton-Smith) welcomed specially invited guests, who included Mrs Averill and representatives from St. Hilda’s College Old Girls’ Association. On Saturday afternoon a record num. ber of members renewed schoolday friendships, while watching the annual tennis match, old girls versus presentday girls, for the Betty Thomas Cup. which was won by the present-day girls. The teams were: present-day girls, Margaret Westgarth (captain), Barbara Flesher. Jean Calder, Gaye Redpath, Janet Williamson, Jacqueline Craythorne, and Barbara Needham; old "iris. Miss Betty Vizer (captain), Mrs John Lawrence, and Misses Felicity Ower. Bettv Hatherley, Judith Hobbs. Elizabeth Ensor, Avril Jones, and Margaret Cameron. After afternoon tea had been served by Mrs Morton-Smith and members of the committee,.the old girls’ race for the Addeh Perkins Cup was run on the hockey field. It was won by Mrs Ronald Woods with Mrs W. Quirk second, and Miss Nancy Hawson third. A children’s race was won by Gillian Mathieson with Henry Wauchop second and Simon Bell third.

HARD OF HEARING LEAGUE

MEMBERS ATTEND PARTY AT SUMNER

Members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing and some of their friends were on Saturday the guests of Mr Cranleigh Barton at a very nleasant garden party held at his home on Clifton terrace, Sumner. Mr Barton is chairman of the league s entertainment committee, which arranges social gatherings for members during the year.

On Saturday the guests, numbering about 4(), greatly enioved the beau H * of his picturesque hillside garden, with its variety and informality. After strolling along grassy paths, among beds of roses, Russell lupins, irises, forget-me-nots, and marigolds, the guests made their way by woodland naths through bush and ferns to reach another lovely garden at a higher level, where summer flowers were blooming. Tea was served indoors, and the visitors enjoyed the magnificent views 'rom the windows and examined with interest the many unusual treasures, collected by Mr Barton during his travels overseas.

SOROPTIMIST GARDEN PARTY

One of the major events of the year of the Christchurch Soroptimist Club is its annual garden party, which this year was held with great success on Saturday at the home of the Misses Lovell-Smith, "Midway,” Riccarton road. Part of the proceeds of the gathering will be given to aid the project for the after-care of intellectually handicapped young adults. In a lovely setting stalls were arranged round the lawn at “Midway,” and an entertaining puppet show was -riven by Mr and Mrs John Hgndry. Miss Reryi Bigg-Wither, 'and Mrs Moira Dean. The chief office-bearers of the club, Miss K. J. Scotter (president). Miss I. Cleary (secretary) and Miss M. Nash (treasurer), sunervised arrangements and the following were the stalls and stallholders: bonks and magazines. Mrs D. Shearer; white elephants, Miss E. E’iott: produce, plants and flowers. Miss D. Lye; work, Mrs L. Blakely; Mrs E. Morris; cakes. Miss D. Berggren.
