SIX PLAYERS CHOSEN B. M. SILK EXPECTED TO BE CAPTAIN (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, November 18. The golf team to represent New Zea« land in Britain next year is:— A. Gibbs (Otago). T. J. Jeffery (New Plymouth). S. G. Jones (Hastings). A. R. Timms (St. Clair). D. L. Woon (Hamilton). B. M. Silk (Wanganui). This team, announced at the conclusion of the New Zealand golf championships at Balmacewen today, will leave New Zealand on May 4 and return probably at the end of June, It will play in the Commonwealth tournament at St. Andrews against teams from Britain and the Commonwealth. Members of the team will compete in the British amateur championship, but will have left for New Zealand by the time the British open is played. has been selected, but it is generally thought that Silk will be given this honour. The chairman of the New Zealand Golf Cpuqcil (Mr D. R. Richmond) will manage the team. The team was selected by Messrs G. P. Roberts, B. H. Menzies, and J. A. Scouler. all members of the New Zealand Golf Council. It was generally expected that R. H. Glading (Hamilton) would be a member of the side. The success of Timms during the match play of the amateur championship strengthened his chances,, and he probably won his place with his play in the final. Seven down at the twenty*, eighth, he showed then the fighting qualities desired of a New Zealand representative, and took the match to the thirtysecond green. - • ': Woon, Jeffery, and Jones were member* of the New Zeaalnd team that competed this year in Australia. Gibbs, amateur champion in 1948 and a semi-finalist thil year, and Silk are former New Zealand representatives.
