NEW STEAMER EXPRESS
Collapsible Stables Below Decks
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 6. “The most notable ship delivered from the river Tyne recently was the turbo-electric passenger liner Maori, built by Vickers Armstrongs, Ltd., for the Union Steam ship Company,” says “Lloyd’s List.”
“There has been exceptional local interest in this ship, because she was launched in November last year by Princess Margaret, and last month many people lined the river banks and
vantage points in the harbour when the vessel put to sea for her first trials. “The Maori, now on her way to New Zealand, is .full of technical interest. She is in many, respects a ,big ferry, although, because of the sea passage between her two terminal ports, she has been constructed to the highest class of ocean liner.
“A feature is the provision of stables below decks to accommodate 30 racehorses.
“There is constant traffic in racehorses to and from meetings in the North and South Islands. The stables are so designed that the stalls can be collapsed and stored, and the stables turned into cargo space if no horses are carried.”
Hold-up with Air Pistols.— Dried peas frightened two youths armed with air pistols who attempted to hold up a middle-aged woman in her general store in London. When the youths asked-for biscuits and said, “Stick ’em up!” she replied, “Don’t be silly.” and hurled the dried peas at them. The youths fired their pistols and escaped.—London, November 5.
