AUCKLAND SCHOOL JUBILEE

CANTERBURY OLD GIRLS HOLD REUNION To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the Girls’ Diocesan High School in Auckland, a reunion of old girls of the school who now live in Canterbury was held in Christchurch. A communion service was held in the morning in the Chapel of St. Michael and St. George in the Christchurch Cathedral. The Ven. Archdeacon W. W. Averill conducted the service; the Dean of Christchuhch (the Very Rev.. Martin Sullivan) read the Epistle; and Archbishop Averill, who was formerly very closely associated with the school, gave the absolution and pronounced the blessing. Later, a luncheon party was held. It was attended by former pupils who had attended the school as long ago as 1904 and as lately as 1948. A special gue£t was Mrs Roberton, widow of Dr. Roberton; one of the founders of the school. Also present were Miss Laura Bowen and Miss A. Merton, former teachers at the school. Mrs L. C. L. Averill presided at the luncheon, and Mrs Roberton gave a short account of the early days of the school. A letter of greeting and good wishes, signed by all present, was sent from the reunion to the committee arranging the jubilee celebrations in Auckland this week. It was decided to make the reunion an annual event. A new shoe fashion is sweeping London—Tor flat “harlequin’’ shoes, which have brilliantly coloured dia-mond-checked uppers. In shape they are a little like last season’s heelless ball&ina slippers. They are selling fast to wear with tight black trousers or casual skirts. They are made in varying combinations of green, red. blue and yellow leather. Another best-seller is a new idea in stockings —dull-finish reversible nylons, made with a black seam on one side and a self-coloured seam on the other, and no “wrong side.”
