HIGH RAINFALL, LOW AIR TEMPERATURES

Air temperatures during October were below’ average and rainfall was excessive, according to a report on meteorological observations by the Magnetic Survey in Christchurch. The approximate mean temperature last month was 1.4 degrees below average; the mean maximum temperature was 2 degrees below average; and the mean minimum temperature was 0.7 degrees below’ average. The mean grass minimum temperature, at 38.9 degrees, was 1.4 degrees above average. Six frosts were registered. The rainfall was 1.50 inches higher than the average for October of 1.99 inches. Earth temperatures at-Ift, 3ft, and sft were respectively 0.2 degrees, 0.1 degrees and 1.1 degrees higher than average.

Earth Temperatures.—mean at a depth of Ift, 54.4 degrees; mean at a depth of 3ft. 53.4 degrees; mean at a depth of sft, 52.5 degrees.

Sunshine.—total amount of sunshine. 157.6 hours; mean daily amount, 5.1 hours.
