WEATHER LAST MONTH
HIGH RAINFALL, LOW AIR TEMPERATURES
Air temperatures during October were below’ average and rainfall was excessive, according to a report on meteorological observations by the Magnetic Survey in Christchurch. The approximate mean temperature last month was 1.4 degrees below average; the mean maximum temperature was 2 degrees below average; and the mean minimum temperature was 0.7 degrees below’ average. The mean grass minimum temperature, at 38.9 degrees, was 1.4 degrees above average. Six frosts were registered. The rainfall was 1.50 inches higher than the average for October of 1.99 inches. Earth temperatures at-Ift, 3ft, and sft were respectively 0.2 degrees, 0.1 degrees and 1.1 degrees higher than average.
The total duration of sunshine (recorded at Harew’ood) was 28.6 hours less than the average of 186.2 hours. The readings for the month were:—
Barometer.—mean for month, 29.935 in; highest reading, (on October 20) 30.292 in; lowest reading, (on October 9) 29298 in. Temperature In Shade.—mean for moonth, 51.7 degrees; highest reading, (on October 21) 80.1 degrees; lowest reading, (on October 1) 32.7 degrees. Temperature Exposed.—mean minimum on grass, 38.9 degrees; lowest reading, (on October 3) 25.4 degrees.
Moisture.—mean daily amount of cloud, (0-8 observed at 9.00 a.m.), 5.5; total amount of rain. 3.49 in; number of rainy days, 13; heaviest fall, (on October 9) 1.06 in.
Earth Temperatures.—mean at a depth of Ift, 54.4 degrees; mean at a depth of 3ft. 53.4 degrees; mean at a depth of sft, 52.5 degrees.
Sunshine.—total amount of sunshine. 157.6 hours; mean daily amount, 5.1 hours.
