Chamber of Commerce Hears Dr. Jobbems
- MOTION TAKEN IN COMMITTEE
An address by Professor G. Jobbems was heard in committee by the council of, the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last evening, as was the discussion on Mr R. C. Neville’s motion that the chamber urge the Canterbury. University College Council to reconsider its decision to move the university from the city of Christchurch. “Why was it considered necessary to put my notice of motion in that order on the agenda?” Mr Neville asked, when all matters listed on the agenda for discussion in open meeting had been considered. The president (Mr R. A. Witbrock): After discussing this matter with Dr. Jobbems, who has been invited to speak tonight, and with the actingchairmans of the. university council, I decided it would be better to have it in committee at this stage. I took the responsibility of placing it in that position in the agenda, and ask for your approval of my action. Mr J. Boyd-Clark moved that the chairman’s action be approved and the motion was seconded.
Before the motion was. put, Mr Neville said he was disappointed the matter was not to be discussed in open meeting. “Unless the discussion is reported this council cannot give people a lead in the matter.” The motion was then put and carried, only Mr Neville dissenting.
