MAYORALTY OF CHRISTCHURCH
RE ELECTION OF MR MACFARLANE
MAJORITY REDUCED ON FINAL COUNT
By a majority of 1897, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P. has been rerelected Mayor of Christchurch. His election night majority was 2269. The final figures, including the postal and declaration votes, were:—R. M. Macfarlane 21,316, J. L. Hay, 19,419, informal, 195. The total votes cast were 49 930. The result of the election will be declared next week at the same time as the final figures of the election for the City Council are announced. The votes for councillors are now being counted. The prospect is that Mr Macfarlane will be installed as Mayor on November 18 and that after the councillors are sworn into office the appointments of Deputy-Mayor and members of committees will be made. Cr. G. Manning is certain to be Deputy-Mayor again. The custom in the past has been for the councillors to indicate their preferences for committee appointments.
