AMBERLEY SHOW

LARGE FAT LAMB ‘ ENTRIES

JERSEY CATTLE CLASSES WELL SUPPORTED

Very large classes of fat lambs at the Amberley Agricultural and Pastoral Association s annual show on Saturday were a striking illustration of tne district's reputation as tne earliest lamo fattening district m Canterbury. The Jersey cattle classes were strongly supported by breeders north of the Waimaxariri river and, as at the Ellesmere and Northern shows earlier last month, competition in the light horse and pony classes was strong.

Last year's record entry of 1719 was exceeded by 360, making a total of 3079 ok Saturday. Gate takings were also a record, £l«0, compared with £125 15s last year.

As usual the fat lamb section was a feature of the show. A total of 94 entries totalling 288 lambs was judged, and there were as many as 25 pens in the largest class. The heavy-weight classes were not as good as last year, and the judge’s task of picking the winners was comparatively easy, but the lighterweight classes were better than at the previous show. This class of lamb had come forward in excellent condition, and the task of selecting the place-getters was not easy. The champion pen of lambs was exhibited by A. D. Gardiner in a class for lambs not over 821 b live weight.

Seventeen entries of three lambs, 361 b or under, dressed weight, and nine entries of three lambs over 361 b dressed weight will be judged on the hooks at Borthwicks today. The lambs in these two classes were picked from pens exhibited at the show on Saturday. The good weather and the well-ap-pointed pens were probably a strong factor in showing the sheep off to such an advantage as they were on Saturday, for the flock sheep section, in particular, was the best of the North Canterbury spring shows this year. In classes with up to 17 entries L. J. Stackhouse won seven first awards in the fine-woolled sheep classes. Ewe hoggets were forward in strong numbers, and the prize-winning sheep were full of quality. Fifty-nine entries were judged in the Corriedale classes. The sheep were of good average quality, although some were lacking substance in the wool according to the judge, Mr A. H. Kenington, of Seddon. The champion ram shown by D. S. Johns was a good, bold sire, with a heavy, good quality fleece. The reserve champion shown by H. C. A. Sidey was also a good sheep, but a little finer in the wool than the champion.

The champion ewe exhibited by H. C. A. Sidey was a very good sheep, said Mr Kenington, and carried the right type of woo! for a ewe. The reserve champion shown in natural condition by H. M. and T. R. Saunders was a close contender for the championship.

Jersey Cattle Clawes About 90 head of Jersey cattle made up the entire cattle entry, as usual at the Amberley Show. The milking cows were well up to metropolitan standard, said the judge, Mr W. D. Dron, of Nelson. In all the female cattle classes the placegetters were separated by only small margins. The champion cow was exhibited by J. M. Blyth, and W. J. Russell showed the reserve champion. R. W. Frost exhibited the champion bull, and J. M. Blyth showed the reserve champion. The green and sappy nature of the grass proved a set-back for competitors in the ring events. In the hunting events, in particular, many horses which baulked at the second hurdle invariably slid into the jump and fell over. The hack classes provided a surprise in the championship class, which was won by Mrs H. T. Little’s Duhallow, with Miss L. Macfarlane's Skylark second. Mrs B. G. Rutherford’s Delight, which won the championship at Ellesmere and Rangiora, won two first awards and one second. The awards were well spread in the saddle hack classes and indicated the effect that the ground might have had on previous winners of major prizes. Results were:— SHEEP Merino (Judge: Mr T.
