ADDINGTON MARKET

FAT EWE PRICES FALL

Shorn Lines Down By 10s To 12s FAT CATTLE STEADY The feature of Addington stock market yesterday was the sharp decline in values for fat ewes which have lately been steadily mounting in value. Shorn ewes showed the biggest decline. They were cheaper by 10s to 12s. Other classes of ewes and wethers were also several shillings cheaper. In the adult section of the store sheep sale station wethers were in demand at about 2s 6d above late rates. Best wether hoggets were firm, but other sorts were harder to sell. Ewe§ and lambs were dearer. There was again a high quality entry of fat cattle. Steers and heifers sold on a par with late rates. Cows sold well, but showed a weakening tendency. STORE SHEEP At 1560 head, including about 121 ewe hoggets, the store hogget section was much larger than last week. It included a number of good, attractive lines, and for these values were up to those of last week, but medium and smaller sorts were harder to sell and were Is to 2s below late rates. Best shorn wether hoggets made from 54s 6d to 575, good 49s to 545, and others down to 425. Woolly wether hoggets fetched from 66s to 80s. There were few ewe hoggets and the top price for this class was 80s for a small selection in the wool. The top price for shorn wether hoggets was 575. obtained by F. N. J. Jones (Blenheim) for 69 and F. G. Butt (Blenheim) for 70. There were three sales at 6d under the top value. Sixty woolly wether hoggets from Temuka sold at 80s, and 25 woolly ewe hoggets from Ashburton also realised 80s. In the adult sheep section the yarding was 2146 head, almost four times the size of last week’s offering. Seven hundred and forty five two and three-shear fairly early shorn Romney cross and halfbred wethers came forward from R. W. Wightman (Winterslow station). They were in good condition and sold readily from 47s to 555. At these prices they were at least 2s 6d above late rates. The section also included some good shorn four-tooth wethers which sold at about late rates. There were about half a dozen pens of woolly ewes with some good lambs at foot. They sold at up to 2s better than last week, particularly for the better sorts. The top priced line made 525. In it were 49 ewes and 60 lambs from Mrs M. G. Ferguson (Waiau).

SPRING LAMBS There was an entry of 35 spring lambs, which drew strong competition from butchers. The lambs were generally wellgrown, and in attractive condition. Prices ranged from 59s 7d to 75s Id for the best of three from L. J. Johnson (Aylesbury). FAT HOGGETS The entry of fat hoggets was 726. compared with 889 last week. A large proportion of the shorn sheep were only ordinary quality, but there was a proportion of the entry which was very satisfactory for butchers’ requirements. Prices for all classes were up to recent rates, with prime sheep selling exceptionally well. Hoggets in the wool made to 99s Id for one from S. Bird (Blenheim), and others made down to 63s Id. Best shorn hoggets sold to 78s Id to five from D. J. Stewart (Rakaia), good to 67s Id, medium, to 62s 7d, and light down to 52s Id. FAT SHEEP The fat sheep yarding was 3672, compared with 3726 last week. The sale was one of the poorest for a long time, with competition for all classes extremely limited. Shorn ewes showed the biggest decline in values, and were from 10s to 12s cheaper. In some cases the downward movement was even bigger. Ewes showing excess fat were not wanted, and ewes in wool were easier by about 7s or Bs. Wethers were also sharply cheaper than a week ago. Good quality were down 3s to 4s, medium-weight 5s to 6s, and lighter weights were hard to sell and were easier by 7s to Bs. They were making very little more than store values. STORE CATTLE Except for several pens of good adult steers, the store cattle yarding consisted mainly of nondescript coWs and younger cattle in poor condition. Very few stationbred yearling steers and heifers were forward. There was a large attendance of buyers, and prices remained firm on late rates, although adult cattle appeared cheaper in comparison with prices paid fbr yearlings. ~ x A line of 51 three-year-old steers from North Canterbury comprised the bulk of the adult cattle offering. They were in good condition; and sold from £35 3s 6d to £3B 18s 6d. Three trucks of Aberdeen Angus adult steers—3l head in all—made from £34 13s 6d to £36 fls 6d, and a pen of nine steers bred on the same lines made £37 13s 6d. . Two-year-old Shorthorn steers made from £29 18s 6d for a pen of 11 to £3l 3s 6d for a lot of 10. Hereford yearling steers made to £24 18s 6d for a pen of 11. and a truck of 15 Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorn steers of the same age made £26 8s 6d.

DAIRY CATTLE In the dairy cattle section there was an entry of about 50 head, with Jerseys of mixed quality predominating. The balance of the selection consisted mainly of Friesians. The heifer entry was larger than it has been for the last two weeks. For all classes there was a ready sale at values 30s to £2 up for the best, and 20s to 30s better for poorer quality. Best second, third, and fourth calvers sold at from £3l to £3B, with odd sales to £43, medium £23 to £3O, and others down to £l7. Best heifers sold at from £3O to £36. and others made from £3O down to £23. FAT PIGS The yarding in the porker section was similar to last week, and quality was very mixed. The market opened on a very firm tone, and remained fully firm throughout the sale. Values Were 2s to 3s a head in advance of last week’s. Choppers were in medium supply, and the market was again a good one. In the bacon section the entry was small, and the demand was very keen at values 3s to 4s a head in advance of last week’s values. Values were:— Light porkers, £7 3s 6d to £7 19s fid. Medium, £8 4s 6d to £8 14s fid. Heavy porkers, £8 17s 6d to £9 4s 6d. Choppers, £l2 Is to £2l Is. Light baconers, £lO 2s 6d to £lO 19s 6d. Medium baconers, £ll 4s 6d to £l2 Is 6d. Heavy baconers, £l2 4s 6d to £l3 3s fid. STORE PIGS Store pig entries were slightly larger than last week, and practically the whole of the yarding consisted of weaners and slips. Only about eight or nine pens of medium stores were yarded. The attendance of buyers was larger and the market opened on a very firm tone. Although there was a slight easing in the middle of the sale, values fully recovered, and over the last race prices were fully up to the opening rates. Values were:— Small weaners, 70s to 78s. . Best weaners, 80s to 90s. v Slips. 94s to £5. Small stores, £5 5s to £5 10s. Medium stores, £5 15s to £6 ss. Large stores. £6 6s to £6 10s.
