DETERRENT TO SOVIET
TEDDER URGES FORCE OF ATOM_BOMBERS LONDON, October 6. Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Tedder, the war-time deputy to General Eisenhower, said today that it would be a fatal mistake if America concentrated on passive air defence. A strong striking force of atom bombers was the only successful coun-ter-threat to aggression which the Western nations could offer to prevent an atomic battle which might destroy civilisation.
"I have seen reports that the American authorities are seriously considering putting the bulk of their defence effort into passive air defence against atomic attack,” he said. "With all respect to experts who have given that advice, I myself believe that such a policy would be a fatal mistake.” Lord Tedder said that this policy would greatly increase the risk of war and atomic attack, since the deterrent afforded by the American atomic bomber force would have been sacrificed. The fact that the Russians hpd developed their own atomic weapons did not lessen the deterrent effect of this fearful counter-threat.
