SUVA WHARF AREA

PLAN FOR REMOVAL TO WALU BAY

(Rec. 8.30 p.m.) SUVA, Sept. 21. The Government of Fiji proposed to move the main Suva wharf area to Walu Bay, at a cost of about £2,300.000, said the Governor (Sir Ronald Garvey) in an address to the Legislative Council today. The old King’s Wharf, which has long been scheduled for replacement, was badly damaged by the 1952 hurricane. Subsequently, it was repaired, but the Government then decided it would have to be replaced. Sir Ronald Garvey said today that the recent earthquake had revealed new weaknesses in the wharf area which “reinforce the proposal to build a new wharf on the solid foundations available at Walu Bay.”

Temporary repairs, costing £90,000, would keep the port open in the meantime, said the Governor. The Government’s plan, which was now before the Secretary of State for Colonies, included new fruit storage and refrigeration buildings at Walu Bay and the removal of oil companies’ installations from the city area to a new site adjoining a new oil berth to be built beyond Walu Bay. World Hurdles Record Claimed.—A Soviet hurdler, J. Lituev, broke the 19-year-old world record for the 400 metres hurdles with a time of 50.4 sec during the Soviet Union Hungarian athletic meeting, according to the Hungarian News Agency. The previous record of 50.6 sec was set by Glenn Hardin (America), in Stockholm in July, 1934.—London, Sept. 21.
