NARROW WIN FOR CAVANDALE

trotting

SEPTEMBER HANDICAP

AT AUCKLAND Cavandale, one of the best sprinters produced in the North Island last seaion, showed great gameness to win the £1750 September Handicap on the first day of the Auckland ’Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday ip one of the most exciting finishes seen on the course for some time. The Icevus gelding made all the pace and looked to be well beaten with half a furlong to run. At this stage he was joined by Petite Yvonne and he finished on again to take a head decision. Dawnlight was only half a head back third. Her driver attempted to push her through between Cavandale and Petite Yvonne and when she got dear it was too late. She finished brilliantly, and if her driver had switched her to the outside she would probably have won. Cavandale, which is trained at Frankton by F. Smith for Mr C. W. Eyre, is a six-year-old gelding. He is by far the best of the progeny of the Australian-bred sire, Icevus, raced in New Zealand, and he will have bright prospects of extending his record on the second day of the meeting. He appears to have developed more stamina with age and he should have a most profitable season. Petite Yvonne was far from disgraced when she was beaten by such a narrow margin. The U. Scott mare conceded Cavandale 36 yards and her performance on a track which, although it provided good going, was not conducive to speed, to record 3min 13 3-ssec for the mile and a half, was outstanding. Petite Yvonne was produced again later in the day and she gained an overdue win in the Takanini Handicap, winning from Billy Boy without being asked for a serious effort.

Her performances on Saturday brought Petite Yvonne’s record to 11 wins, 35 placings, and £10,337 10s in stakes. She will have bright prospects of extending her record on the final day of the meeting. She is one of the best mares in commission as she proved when she was placed in her four starts at Addington last month. Sailaway Amiss The Dillon Hall stallion, Sailaway which was recently sent to Canterbury, has gone amiss and he has been returned to his Southland owner. Sailaway showed more than average ability in his races in Southland, but he has been a difficult horse to keep sound. It now appears that his racing days may be numbered. Lexeter Fails Lexeter.which had previously shown his best form in bad ground, came in for surprisingly strong support in the Introductory Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday, and he started a firm 3,2 favourite. He broke badly at the start and was well out of his ground most of the way. He showed speed over the last halfmile to finish eleventh. Lexeter is in peat order at present and he may not be Tong showing form, especially if he gets a wet track in the next few weeks. Looked Unlucky Flywheel looked a little unlucky to finish no closer than fourth in the Seaview Handicap at New Brighton on Saturday. The Grattan Loval gelding did not get a run in the straight and he was finishing well at the post. Flywheel was having his first start for some months and his Ashburton owner-trainer, J. Grice, had him well forward. More favourably placed in his next appearance, which may be at the Methven meeting on Saturday, he may gain a well-deserved win. Four Wins The Grattan Loyal pacer. Sir Christopher, which was taken to Australia by the Tai Tapu trainer, W. L. Harris, has struck form in recent weeks and in seven starts he has had four wins and three piacings. He will shortly have his first race at Harold Park and should not take Jong to win a qualifying stake. Sir Christopher has shown considerable promise in Australia and seems to be quite sound now. He is an eight-year-old by Grattan Loyal from Virgin Gold, the dam also of Noble- Ginnie, by Frank Worthy. Now Trotting Night Wind, which showed ' ability in the Oamaru Juvenile Stakes last season, has been converted to the trotting gait by her Leeston owner, E. D. Johnson, and she will have her first start at her new gait in the next few weeks. The U. Scott three-year-old has shown consider-

Probationary Drivers Probationary drivers showed to advantage in the Improvers’ Handicap at Epsom Saturday. It was the first race restricted to this class of horseman run by the Auckland Trotting Club. The race was won easily by the firm favourite, Heroism, a member of J. K. ' Hughes’s Pukekohe team. He was well handled Dy R- Adcock, who kept him on the rails until near the straight. He finished brilliantly and won with a lot in reserve. Heroism looked unlucky not to win a race at the recent Wellington meeting, out now that he has struck form he should carry on. He is a four-year-old entire by Light Brigade from Chestnut Hmgen. by Great Bingen from the imported mare. Belle Keller, ancestress of a number of fine performers, including Certissimus and Lochinvar. ACCEPTANCES AUCKLAND CLUB (New Zealand Press Association) _. , AUCKLAND, September 21.
