N.Z. TOURNAMENT AT WANGANUI TITLE-HOLDER BEATEN ON FIRST DAY (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, September 21. The New Zealand Boxing Association s amateur tournament opened at Wanganui today, and the bouts for the most part were keenly contested. F. Lingman, the middle-weight champion, of Wellington, was the only title-holder beaten today. He was outpointed by H. Sadler, of Hamilton. The standard has been high, and it is considered that’ New Zealand will have fair representation at the British Empire Games at Vancouver next year. An advisory committee is watching the tournament to make tentative selections for the New Zealand team for the Empire Games.

Results today were:— Fly-weight.—P. Ah Van (Auckland) bea B. Casey (Otago) on points; J. Curtif (Hamilton) beat M. Norton (Marlborough; on a technical knock-out.

Bantam-weight.—l. Coombes (Taranaki) beat N. McLean (Wanganui) on a technical knock-out); L. Davey (Wellington) beat R. Stevenson (Auckland) on points; J. Harrison (Hawke’s Bay) beat V. Valentine (Waikato) on points. Harrison is the title-holder.

Feather-weight.—G. P. Finlay (Greymouth) beat T. McCrory (Wellington) on points; S. Moffitt (Oamaru) beat N. Drury (Canterbury) on points; A. Hanks (Auckland) beat W. Leckie (Otago), by default; P. Donovan (Hawke’s Bay) beat N. Adamson (Waimate) on a technical knock-out. Leckie is the title-holder.

NEXT TOURNEY AT WELLINGTON (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, September 21. The national amateur boxing championships will be held at Wellington next year. This was decided at the opening yesterday of the New Zealand Amateur Boxing Association’s annual conference at Wanganui. Several centres submitted applications for the championships, but Wellington was favoured because it was prepared to give the total profits to the travelling fund for the New Zealand Empire Games team next year. Mr H. M. Chainey, of Wanganui, was elected president of the association. Other officers elected were:—vice-presidents, Messrs L. McGlashin (Greymouth) and R. W. Rose (Waimate); council. Dr. J. F. Bradbury, Dr. D. G. Wallace, and Messrs E. A. Blundell, H. N. Hunt, K. A. Meale, and A. S. Parker (all of Wellington). Members of a special advisory panel appointed to assist the council in selecting boxers for the British Empire Games were chosen as follows:—Messrs F. H. Hughes (Southland). W. O’Connor (Waimate). F. Pearcey (Auckland), and F. M. G. Watchom (Manawatu).
