JET EXPLODES AT AIR DISPLAY
Pilot Killed And
Three Injured
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 19. A Royal Air Force Meteor jet blew up in the air over big crowds watching a Battle of Britain display at Coniqgsby, Lincolnshire, today. The pilot was killed. Most of the wreckage fell clear of the airfield, but three persons were slightly injured by falling debris. The display was nearly over when the crash occurred.
More than 1,000,000 persons thronged the 70 R.A.F. aerodromes at the Battle of Britain “at home.’’ It was the first time that the 1,000,000 mark had been exceeded in nine years of “at homes,” in spite of bad weather in the west and north, which curtailed flying. The biggest attendances were at Fighter Command aerodromes, witn nearly 50,000 guests at the 19 stations The biggest crowd was at the famous Battle of Britain station of Biggin Hill, where 160,000 visitors set up a record.
