HURLEY SHIELD MATCHES TECHNICAL BEATEN BY THISTLE The weather was warm and grounds hard for the two championship games Elayed on Saturday afternoon. At Hag>y Park Western beat University, 5 goals to 2, and at English Park Thistle beat Technical by the odd goal in three. Championship points are:—Western 25, Technical 20, City 13, Shamrock 13, Atlantis 11, Nomads 10. University 9, Thistle 9. Next Saturday’s game between Shamrock and Thistle will complete the Hurley Shield fixtures for the season. ' THISTLE v. TECHNICAL Technical beat Thistle 4-1 last week in the English Cup final, but the position was reversed at English Park on Saturday when Thistle won by the odd goal in three. However, in this match Technical had nothing to lose, and gave its poorest display this season. Altogether it was a disappointing game with the Thistle eleven enjoying a territorial advantage not so much by good fqptbaH but through the casual opposition. ... One bright aspect was the good defence put up McGarry, the Thistle left back, Johnstone, right back, and Jones, centrehalf, McGarry in particular stood out by his work in completely dominating Gardenbrock, the flying Technical outside right. The Thistle forwards lost many scoring opportunities by P°2F marksmanship, the best players being T. Kennedy, inside left, and R. Wilson, outside left. Technical never looked a winning combination. The best players were K. Lucas, inside right, and G. Gibson, centre half. Clarke (2) scored for Thistle and V. Smith for Technical.

Referee: Mr C. Sweeney. WESTERN v. UNIVERSITY In a keenly-contested game at Hagley Park, Western beat University by 5 goals to 2. Western was steadier on defence and more accurate in finishing off attacking thrusts. In its last game of the season and with the Hurley Shield safely won, Western took the opportunity of trying out some of its promising younger material. Here J. Glasson, outside left, and A. Gray, centre forward, proved themselves very likely recruits for senior ranks next season. Others who played well for Western were J. Austin, S. Ralph, and R. Smith. University has suffered through injuries, the most serious of which to the side’s prospects has been the absence of J. Langley, the Canterbury goalkeeper. Langley has been a tower of strength to University this season and the playing of Duckworth, usually a very sound centre half, as custodian, left the side weakened in mid-field play against Western. Mahoney, Feenstra. Averill, and Blythe were the pick of the University players. , „ J. Glasson (2), A. Gray (2), and S. Hinchley scored for Western and P. Shaheed (2) for University.
