“A Borrowed” Shield”

Prominent in the parade of Ranfurly Shield winners and their supporters at the Christchurch railway station yesterday was an outsize in Ranfurly Shields, a replica of the much-prized trophy three times the normal size, carried by two well-known footballers. The “shield” has a history. It was presented to the Waikato Rugby Union when it held the shield and “borrowed” by Wellington when it took the trophy. Apparently the two Canterbury supporters also “borrowed” it and for the period of shield tenure in Canterbury it will remain in Christchurch.
