CHINA AND THE UNITED NATIONS
Sir,—“Admit China” complains that communistic China has not been admitted to membership of the United Nations. The likely reason is her support of an aggressor and her attack on the soldiers of 16 members of the United Nations who fulfilled their obligations by going to the assistance or tne Victim of aggression. Had it not been for the attack on South Korea by connnunistic North Korea, there would have been no war; and if communistic China had not gone to the assistance of the aggressor the war etc Uld haVe finished lon B ago.—Yours, , BE REASONABLE. September 16, 1953.
—The Government’s decision not to recognise Peking appears to offend against both common sense and humanity—against common sense because, while the Communists have undoubted control of China, Chiang bis only support from America. Chinese aggression” is alleged in Korea and Indo-China; but Communist China had been snubbed and (apParentiy at least) threatened by the West before Chinese soldiers appeared m Korea. And there have been enough reports of French racketeering and repression to explain much of the trouble in Indo-China. Nor can nonapproval of Communism be advanced a s an argument against recognition while Franco’s Spain is recognised. The decision offends against humanity because we have read in this very newspaper of the progress recently made in Uuna and of the great upsurge of enthusiasm in a hitherto hopeless people. Are we to take a stand that would destroy this progress?—Yours, etc., o , MW. September 16, 1953.
