AMERICAN AGENCY IN DUNEDIN
CLOSURE ANNOUNCED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 16. The American Consular Agency at Dunedin will be closed on September 25, according to an Announcement today by the United States Ambassador (Mr R. M. Scotten). The United States Government’s decision to close this office, which had been .established in 1862, had been made with great regret, the Ambassador said, particularly because of the importance of Dunedin as one of New Zealand’s major cities. However, the current economy programme of his Government had made necessary the closing of the agency and of 19 other consular establishments in different parts of’the world, said Mr Scotten. He paid tribute to the services of the present Consular Agent (Mr Richard H. Reeves), who succeeded his father in the office. Mr Reeves and his father, Mr Harman Reeves, had served as Consular Agents in Dunedin for a total of 32 years—a remarkable record in the American Consular Service, said Mr Scotten.
