INTER-ISLAND GAMES
TEAMS EVENLY MATCHED (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 30. Well matched, with nothing between the teams right until the last minute of the game, the North and South Island teams drew, 18-all, in the annual inter-island basketball match played at. Surrey Park, Invercargill, on Saturday.
South Island was the first team to score, and throughout the spell the scores mounted evenly to a half-time score of 3all.
The advantage changed many times in I the second half. North Island held a twopoint lead for some minutes, but South Island equalised and then took the lead, with the score at 16-14.
After a further five minutes, the score was 16-all. South Island again took the lead, 17-16. North Island drew level once again. With the score at 18-all, a North Island forward was shooting the decisive goal when the bell went for full time.
The three North Island forwards, I. Lowe (Auckland), D. Davies (Tauranga), and B. Forward (Wanganui) showed surprising combination, which caught the South Island defence off guard. The South Island’s outstanding player was J. Fuller (Canterbury), who was well supported by D. Weir (Otago) and S. Baird (Otago). The forwards made use of every opportunity, and A. Craig (Southland), the team’s captain, gave an excellent display in defence.
