CONFERENCE ON KOREA
Sir,—The seeming futility of the present debate in the United Nations on which countries should take part in the proposed political conference on Korea does anything but augur well for its success. Even when this conference does eventually take place, can anybody be expected to feel optimistic about its result? A possible way out of this impasse would be the shelving of the present intention —at least for the time being—and the appointment of a United Nations mediator. This was done in the case of Israel with notable success. Why then cannot the same be done today? In Indo-China we read of a build-up in strength by both sides. Here, too, it should be possible for a United Nations mediator to arrange a truce. Fighting has produced nothing definite or really satisfactory for either side. More Bernadottes more Bunches, not more bombs are needed.—Yours, etc., L.J.W. August 29, 1953.
