Allies Criticised For Supporting India
(Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 24. The New York' evening newspapers today attacked Britain and other ‘ f fair weather’’ friends for their support of India’s participation in the Korean conference.
The “World Telegram” in a leading article said: “India contributed only an ambulance unit to the fighting forces, and her actual sympathies were with the aggressors after Red China’s intervention.
“The United States is supporting Korea. Leading the other side is Britain, which just a few weeks ago was holding us solely responsible for bringing Korea into the camp so that the armistice could be signed. It shows how little reliance can be placed on some of our allies when the chips are down. “Now, simply by keeping faith with the legal Government of Korea and the United Nations, the United States is forced to turn to Latin America for support to prevent Korea from being made a victim of big Power politics by Russia. India, and Red China aided and abetted by some of our fair weather friends whom we have regarded as our most dependable allies.”
The Hearst newspaper, the “JournalAmerican.” in a leading article said: “The issue in substance is whether the conference shall be a rigadoon of round-table futility, as the British bloc wants it, or direct across-the-table dealing, with the United Nations represented only by countries that were involved in the Korean fighting, as this nation wants it.”
