GIRLS’ MARCHING TEAMS
DISPLAYS DURING ROYAL TOUR
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 21.
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh had been very interested irr the New Zealand sport of marching, Mr A. G. Harper, director of the Royal tour, told the annual conference of the New Zealand Marching Association today. Mr Harper said he had hoped during the fairly difficult planning of the tour to be able to give the Royal visitors a chance of seeing a marching display because of their interest in the sporting activities of young people. The opportunty had arisen during arrangements for them to attend a sports meeting in Dunedin, and the organisers of the meeting had needed no persuading to include a marching display. Mr Harper said he had also suggested to the authorities in other parts of New Zealand that marching girls should be used to line the Royal tour routes, and in other ways, during the visit. He had received several assurances that this would be done.
“Marching is not just a flash-in-the-pan type of recreation,” said Mr Harper. “It has built up r solid administrative organisation which has put it permanently on the recreational map.”
