FINAL WINGATUI TRIALS
ATTRACTIVE EFFORT BY BRUTUS
"The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, August 20. Brutus, the pre-post favourite for the Tally-Ho Handicap at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday, impressed in his work at Wingatui this morning, when he galloped half a mile in company wtih his stablemate, Red Tinge. Ridden by his trainer, A. I. Powell, the Ruthless six-year-old was not extended, and could have improved on the time of 54sec recorded for the trial. The last three furlongs took 40 3-ssec. Brutus won this event last year, when carrying Br 9, and gave evidence of his form when he finished a good fourth m the Islington Handicap on the final day of the Grand National meeting. The trials were held on the plough, which was slow. The smartest sprint was recorded by Strathcarron, which dashed over half a mile in 53 l-ssec. The Royal Arch gelding will start his racing career in the Trial Stakes, in which he will be ridden by L. W. Hare. Night Glare, which will make his debut in the same race, and will carry the same colours as Jamell, was going nicely to finish on terms with Peony Royal in 53 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40 3-ssec. Wayren finished a length and a half clear of Aylene in 55sec, after taking 13sec for the opening furlong. Not Ridden Out Set Fair and Prospector were not ridden out to finish on terms with Some Bounder in 57sec, the first furlong in 13 3-ssec. Dashing was not hurried to record 58 3-5 sec, the last three furlongs in 43 3-ssec. The Sir Galloway mare was lame when she returned from Riccarton, and has been eased in her work. Mararoyal and Winning Gem covered five furlongs in Imin 8 3-ssec, the last three in 42 3-ssec. Jamell ran two rounds of the track, increased his speed over the last six furlongs, and recorded Imin 24 3-ssec, the last three in 42sec. Jamell is in great heart, but will not be suited by the track, which will be heavy for the meeting on Saturday. Reformed’s Effort Reformed shaded Royal Tower over the same ground in Imin 26sec, the opening three in 41sec. Countenance and Lady Wanaka broke away at the six furlongs, and recorded 57 l-ssec for the last half-mile. Irish Glance, Desert Trek, and Kilmarcrenan were given strong work on the inside grass. Chief Stuart (C. F. Thomas) and Spanish Chief (G. Warden) led Wilden (G. W. Julius) and Paper Royal (B. R. Thomson) over a round of four hurdles at a sound pace. Wilden, which is a doubtful starter in the Vauxhall Handicap, outjumped her companions and showed promise in her new role. The Lum will not start in the Wingatui Handicap because of the track conditions, and The Hob and Chief Mate are also doubtful runners for the same reason.
