GIFT TO CITY MISSION
Jewellery Worth £2OOO
WELLINGTON FUND FOR OLD PEOPLE’S HOSTEL (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 6. Jewellery estimated to be worth £2OOO has been given to the Wellington City Mission for its hostel fund. This collection of heirlooms is the gift of a Hawke’s Bay woman, who read an appeal by the City Missioner (the Rev. Harry Squires) for old gold, silver, and jewellery that he would sell to collectors or auction to raise funds for a hostel for old people. A Hastings woman wrote to Mr Squires offering him some jewellery, and last week she visited him to show him a sample of the jewellery she wanted to give. She produced a platinum ring set with a magnificent black sapphire flanked by two large diamonds. A provisional estimate of its value is £650.
The woman then invited Mr Squires to her home in Hawke’s Bay to take possession of other jewellery. He went to Hawke’s Bay yesterday, and brought back the gifts last night.
