STOCK EXCHANGES MARKET REMAINS BUOYANT A moderate-sized turnover was recorded on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday. The bulk of the dealings were in industrials and chain stores, with price movements on the whole in favour of sellers. Ltd., were steady in business at 14s 9d, with further buyers at 14s Bd—sellers 2d away. Woolworths, New Zealand, scored a sharp rise to sell 5d up at 19s Bd, and in closing quotations buyers offered 19s fid, with sellers holding for 20s. Coles were quoted lower on an ex dividend basis, with buyers at 15s 2d and sellers at 15s 3d. Fractionally better offers were forthcoming for McKenzies at 14s 7d, but sellers were reticent.
New Zealand Breweries were active in sales at the unchanged price of 40s, with more on offer at the close at the same price.
Fairly heavy trading took place in Gear Meats at 26s 9d —an advance of Is 3d. Union Steam preferences, which have had steady inquiry for some time, rose sharply to a sale at 25s Bd, with more wanted at 25s fid—no sellers. >
Kaiapoi .Woollens advanced further to a reported sale at 23s 9d, with further buyers at 23s Bd—no sellers. Feltex (Australia) continued their upward trend when buyers quoted 24s 9d, without attracting sellers. Early this year sales were made as low as 225. In 1951, when the company was paying 12i per cent., the shares sold up to 54s 6d. Among other sales, Donaghy’s Rope improved to business at 38s 3d, with more wanted at 37s 6d, sellers holding for 395. An unsatisfied demand persisted for Government securities, and the one sale reported, that of May, 1953-56, 3 per cents., showed an advance of 5s on Wednesday’s quotations. DOMINION TRANSACTIONS .
