“QUEEN OF THE AIR RACE”
ANOTHER ENTRY FROM CHRISTCHURCH
A further entry for the “Queen of the Air Race” contest has been received by the Canterbury Air Race Council. She is Miss Carol Margaret Munn, who has been sponsored by the Department of Agriculture social club.
Miss Munn, who will be 21 shortly, is a clerk employed by the department. She received her secondary education at St. Mary’s College, which she attended for five years, followed by a year at Canterbury University College. Miss Munn has a special interest in music, art and ballet, and her recreations include tennis, swimming and tramping. Her nomination for the contest has brought the number of Christchurch entries to 18. Wellington Entrants
Two entrants in the contest come from Wellington. The first entry was by Mrs Chris Murray, of Oriental Bay. She has been sponsored by the Wellington Aero Club and is a woolbroker’s clerk. Miss Barbara Aitcheson, the second Wellington entrant, is a telephone operator and has been sponsored by her employer, Hume Industries, Ltd. Previously she had nursing experience. In Dunedin, the first girl to be sponsored by a city firm is Miss Helen Williams, of Kew, who has been proposed by Mitchells’ International Tours. Miss Williams is 23, and is a doctor’s nurse.
According to Mr Bruce Mac Gibbon, secretary of the local committee, there are more people in businesses willing to sponsor girls for the contest than there are applications from girls wishing to enter. There is keen interest in the contest, because repeat orders for entry forms are being received from city businesses. Mr Mac Gibbon said this week that the committee was expecting a flood of entries from girls next week, judging by the numbers of application forms taken to be filled.
