COST OF SHAVES INCREASED

BARBERS SEEK MORE FOR HAIRCUTS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. August 5. The cost of shaves in New Zealand barbers’ shops was today raised from Is 3d to 2s. The Government recently lifted the control on shaving prices. The Hairdressers’ and Tobacconists’ Federation is now applying to have the price of haircuts raised from 2s 3d to 2s 6d.

“The trade has been trying to get shaving decontrolled for 16 months.” said the president of the Wellington Hairdressers’ Association (Mr T. A. Moncrieff) tonight. “It is impossible today to shave a man economically for less than 2s. To charge anything less is to make him a donation.” Mr Moncrieff said that shaving in barbers’ shops was dying a natural death. With prices so uneconomical, barbers had discouraged men wanting shaves, and even bona fide travellers had had difficulty in obtaining them.
