ARBOR DAY
VICE REGAL PLANTING IN GARDENS
Arbor Day, officially falling yesterday, was marked in Christchurch with formal plantings in the Botanic Gardens by the Governor-General (Sir Willoughby Norrie) and Lady Norrie Each planted a new strain of flowering apple chosen by the Director of Parks and Reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett) on his visit to England. Th® Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) and the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) attended the ceremony.
Afterwards the vice-regal party were shown some features of the gardens, including the site of the Royal garden party, before they flew back to Wellington. Next week there will be more gene£al. Arb °r Day Plantings. School children will put in more trees and shrubs near Victoria Park next Mon.7’ the Summit Road Scenic Society will add more at Kennedy’s Bush on August 15, and the Sumner Residents’ Association will extend plantings at the top of Evans Pass. 0
