ATOMIC EXPERIMENTS IN AUSTRALIA
NELSON SCIENTIST TO HEAD MISSION (From Our Own Reporter) NELSON, July 31. The head of the British Ministry of Supply mission which is to conduct atomic experirpents in Australia is Dr. Donald H. Black, son of the late Mr and Mrs Robert Black, of Stoke. His term of appointment in Australia is for three years, during which time he will also act as a scientific adviser to the British High Commissioner in Australia. Dr. Black has had an outstanding scientific career. He was educated at Nelson College, from where he won a university scholarship to take him on to Canterbury University College. He was twice nominated as a Rhodes Scholar and graduated with distinction. He then went to Cambridge University, where he worked for a while under Lord Rutherford at the Cavendish Laboratory. After that, Dr. Black spent some time in private industry. He worked for the Admiralty in the Second World War. Dr. Black left New Zealand 30 years ago and has not been back since, though he has been to Australia and to the United States several times. He is due in Nelson next week to visit relatives. His wife, who is also from Nelson, will accompany him.
