The rapid deterioration in the condition of the older model cars is becoming more obvious every day. When offered as trade-ins, nearly all of this type of car prove to be in need of urgent and costly major overhauls. This position has only arisen during the last 12 months. I have been puzzled to account for the apparent lack of interest being displayed by many owners, in maintaining their cars in better condition. After having questioned many owners on this matter, one fact became very evident and proved conclusively a truth that is becoming more apparent all the time. Owners of cars are generally good spenders. In fact, it would be difficult to find one motorist in New Zealand who has not invested at least £lO on repairs during the last year. This is not a big sum when taken individually, but when the total is taken oVer 500,000 car, truck and motor-cycle owners it becomes the colossal figure of £5,000.000. That is a lot of money to spend on car repairs in one year. Even this huge figure represents only a fraction of the total expenditure incurred by way of maintenance and repairs. Every section of the motor and allied trades' benefits from money spent by car owners. The point that now arises Is this:— Are owners being offered efficient service at a fair and reasonable cost? Do owners receive honest value in return for the tremendous sum of money circulated throughout the motor and allied trades? Watch this space next week for answers to these questions. Items of interest are offered periodically in this space by ALAN J. MCGILLIVRAY, 109 Oxford iefracx Thone 38-883.
