Mrs I. L. M. Coop (Kaituna) returned home on Saturday after having presided at the annual conference of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers, of which she was re-elected Dominion president. Mrs S. E. Jolly, of Cromwell, has been appointed by the New Zealand Federation of Women’s Institutes as a delegate to the conference at Toronto of the Associated Country Women of the World. This, the seventh triennial conference of the organisation, will be held from August 12 to 23. Matters of importance to country women all over the world will be discussed.
Mrs F. E. Burrell (representing the Fendalton electorate), Mrs S. C. P. Nicholls (St. Albans electorate), Mrs P. Stevens (Selwyn electorate), Mrs A. M. Vile (Central electorate), Mrs M. Cadman (Sydenham electorate) and Mrs K. Kyngdon (Lyttelton electorate) will represent the Christchurch elect-, orates at the conference of the National Party at Dunedin next month. The conference will open on Saturday, August 8, and be continued on August 10. Mrs G. H. Ross, Minister of Social Welfare, will, attend the conference. At the final session of the annual conference of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers in Auckland on Friday, the following appointments were made:—lnternational officer, Mrs G. H. Haldane (Golden Bay); Red Cross representative. Mrs M. Bethell (Canterbury); P.P.W.A., Mrs D. R. Jackson (Wanganui); Country Girls’ Clubs, Mrs A. G. Schroder (Rai valley); Corso, Mrs H. J. McLeavey (Ohau). Miss Gwen Montgomery, of Epsom, has returned to Auckland from Sydney. Miss Montgomery has been working in Pakistan for the last two and a naif years as a member pf a health team under the World Health Organisation. She will go to Karachi in October to continue her work.
Captain George Dibbern, of Woody Island, near Hobart, plans to sail his 32-foot ketch Te Rapunga in the transTasman yacht race with a crew of girls. He will sail solely in an advisory capacity. Miss Eileen Morris, an experienced Hobart yachtswoman and navigator, has joined the crew. The race from Auckland to Hobart will be held next January. After the race. Captain Dibbern, who is 64, will set out on a world cruise. The Te Rapunga, which has logged 90,000 miles ocean cruising in more than 40 years, won the second trans-Tas-man race in December, 1934. Pastor Whiting officiated at the monthly devotional service held at the Pensioners’ Club, Worcester street. Solos were sung by Mrs Ferguson and duets by Mr and Mrs Benton, and violin solos were played by Mrs Westall. The accompanists were Mrs Tonkin (organ), Mrs Ferguson (piano), and Mrs Westall (violin).
The Christchurch Women’s Bowling Umpires’ Association held an afternoon social in the Pensioners’ Memorial Hall on Saturday, when the social committee provided a full and varied programme that was greatly enjoyed. A “fairy godfather” with an American accent last week gave the Institute for the Blind in Parnell a cheque for 120 dollars to buy a braille-writing machine for sightless Auckland children. He is Mr H. L. Rigsby, of Houston, Texas, a construction technician working on the new Import Wharf. Mr Rigbsy wrote his cheque after reading in .a newspaper that because of the dollar shortage Mr H. C. A. Lambert, of the Institute for the Blind, was unable to import “Perkins braillers,” which cost 120 dollars each, from the United States.
