FIRE IN MOUNT SOMERS MINE

PRODUCTION LOSS OF 1000 TONS

The fire which broke out in the Mount Somers coalmine earlier in the week was still burning yesterday, but it was hoped that the lire would be brought under control today. An inspection of the mine workings will be carried out by the owner (Mr R. A. Burnett) and mine officials this morning.

Sixteen men employed in the mine have been fighting the fire and preventing its spread. They have been taking it in turns to work in pairs lor stiort periods to seal off the burning coal with sand and concrete blocks which have had to be carted through heavy smoke and fumes.

The loss of production Is expected to be about 1000 tons.

The fire i s thought to have started from the spontaneous combustion of wet coal.
