SWIMMING

CLUB TRAINING SEPARATE HOURS AGAIN ALLOCATED Exclusive use of the Centennial Pool for one hour a week for training during the summer months will be granted again to swimming clubs. The Elmwood and East Christchurch Clubs will combine. When the baths committee of the City Council held a meeting with clubs on the reduction of hours because of the very low average attendance figures of some clubs, the representatives claimed that It would not be practicable for any two clubs to combine. “As against this contention, the Elmwood and East Christchurch Clubs asked that they be permitted the joint use of the pool,” the committee reported to the council last evening. "Last year the Elmwood Club encountered attendance difficulties and the East Christchurch Club did not participate in the scheme."

The committee said it looked to the Canterbury swimming centre to foster greater interest and Increased attendances during the periods of organised training. The committee was confident that next season swimming organisations would rally around, with the result that attendances would increase greatly. Club hours were fixed as follows: Tuesday, Wharenui; Wednesday, Christchurch: Thursday, Christchurch Ladies; Friday, Elmwood and East Christchurch; Saturday, Spreydou.
