MILK ZONING SCHEME

RECOMMENDATIONS OF VENDORS

“I would like to see something better than that—all milk delivered in cartons,” said Miss M. B. Howard, M.P., when the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board yesterday afternoon considered a series of recommendations from the Canterbury Milk Vendors’ Association. One of the recommendations was “that as soon as possible all milk delivered in the area controlled by the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board be bottled.”

Mr W. P. Warner said that the board would have to put through a if it adopted this recommendation.

The association made the recommendations after" its executive had examined the board’s zoning report, map and graph. It also proposed: "that the board require every vendor offering his round to the board for sale to submit to the association a return containing the following particulars: (a) a detailed return of all gallonage delivered by him outside nis ‘demand’ zone or zones; (b) the names of all vendors to his knowledge serving in his ‘demand’ zone or zones; and that no round be transferred until the association’s recommendations have been considered by the board; and that the board receive from the association from time to time recommendations concerning zones which require consolidating.” The chairman, Mr J. Mathison, M.P., said that the board would adopt the first and third recommendations but that the second would be held over in the meantime.

When the board considered the second recommendation Mr Mathison said that it gave hope of good cooperation between the two bodies. Mr Warner said that the time element came into the matter. If the Vendors’ Association recommended that Mr Caithness be included on the emergency committee it would be all right, but if reference had to be made to a full meeting of the association it would not be practicable. Mr L.. Christie said he did not think that it was the board’s job to ask people to supply this information to the association. Mr Mathison: We can’t direct the vendors to do that. Mr Mathison said that the board would have no objection to making the zoning map and chart available for future meetings of the executive of the association at which this matter would be discussed. The association made a request on these lines to the board.
