AUSTRALIANS WIN

RUGBY LEAGUE

AUCKLAND BEATEN BY 26 POINTS TO 4 HARD GAME ON MUDDY FIELD (New Zealand. Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 12. The Australian Rugby League football team beat Auckland by 28 points (eight tries, one converted) to 4 (two penalty goals) at Carlaw Park on Saturday. The Auckland team gave a poor display, and the Australians , frequently resorted to rough tactics. Three minutes before the end of the match, an Australian second-row forward was ordered off the field. The ground was very muddy. The Australians were remarkably adroit in twisting and dodging, but even the mud could not be cited to excuse the high, irresolute tackling by the Auckland team or the inadequate reply of the forwards to the robust style of the Australians. The mud may have stirred the Australians into their aggressive style of play, but the Australian method was foolish in that the team was so much the superior. On a dry, favourable ground, Australia would have won by 40 points at least. Bidding scored three tries for Australia, and McGovern, Hawick, Drew, and Wells one each. Holman converted one try. White kicked Auckland's two penalty goals. The judicial committee of the New Zealand Rugby League Council on Saturdayevening administered a severe warning to A. Paul, the Australian forward who had been ordered from the field. “It was obvious to all that RichardsJolley, the Auckland forward, was struck by Paul,” said the referee (Mr G. Kelly) after the game. o “I had a difficult job,” Mr Kelly said. “The ground conditions were such that I could not blow the whistle for every minor breach' I did my best to make it an open game. It was a tough game, but at no stage did it get out of control.”
