FINAL DAY AT TRENTHAM

Winter Hurdles To Cabana

GAY ECHO WINS STEEPLES (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 12. Cabana, a 100-guinea purchase as an unbroken two-year-old more than three years ago, advanced his stake winnings to £5075 when he won a sensational race for the Winter Hurdles on the final day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday. The race was sensational in a disappointing way for supporters of the best-backed horses, Coppice, Peter Ora, and Indian Scholar, which failed to finish. Coppice, the favourite, fell a mile from home and brought the second favourite, Peter Ora, down. Indian Scholar, the 3-3 favourite, made a bad leap at the second last hurdle and dropped his rider when he appeared to be going just as well as Cabana. Cabana, a rising six-year-old gelding by Master Colossus from Kenfel. has been nominated for the Grand National Hurdles at Riccarton on August 4. He is trained at Greenmeadows by M. J. Burridge, a former Australian, for Mr C. Walker. Cabana won the Trentham Hurdles a week earlier, his only other start at the meeting. Topmast, improved by his race in the Whyte Handicap, in which he finished sixth, on the first day of the meeting, recorded his first win for the season in the Winter Oats Handicap, first leg of the double. His only challenger at the finish came from the Orari-trained Royal Voyage, which ran him to a head, but the Hastings horse was holding the Royal Chief gelding in the last few strides. Topmast is trained by C. J. and J. M. Cameron for Mr A. Robson, who raced the good sprinter Da Vinci a few seasons ago. Topmast carried 18,848 i 10s tickets in an aggregate double pool of £77,777 ss. The second leg, the Onslow Handicap, was decisively won by the 8. 6 favourite, Berne, which carried 820 i tickets. The doubles dividend was £156 13s 6d for £l. Gay Echo easily won the Eric Riddiford Steeplechase for her Waverley owner-trainer, E. S. Lupton, leading for the last six furlongs and keeping well clear of the others. One of only two mares in the race, Gay Echo is a rising nine-year-old by Robin Goodfellow from Gay Gypsy. She is an entrant for the Grand National Steeplechase on August 1. After rain on Saturday morning the track was very heavy. The time for the Riddiford Steeplechase, 7min 13£sec, was 32 seconds slower than last year, and time for other races were correspondingly slow. The totalisator on-course handled £191,657, compared with £220,196 10s last year, a decrease of £28,538 10s. The total for the meeing was £514,430 10s—a decrease of £2433 10s. Led for Long Way

Cabana ran to the front a mile and a half from home in the Winter Hurdles and won unchallenged. His task was eased by falls which put Coppice and Peter Cra out of the race a mile from home, and a bad leap by Indian Scholar when working into a challenging position at the second last hurdle. Indian Scholar, the Parliamentary Handicap winner last Wednesday, dropped his rider. Lay Off led for the first six furlongs and was displaced by Cabana funning through the straight for the first time. With a mile and a quarter to run Cabana led by a length from Lay Off. Then there was another length to Cogitation, which was closely followed by Coppice, Shangola, Peter Ora, and Brown Jester, with two lengths to Indian Scholar, then Abba, Cotswold, and Colonel Argosy, which had been checked.

The race lost a lot of its interest when Coppice crashed at the mile, bringing down Peter Ora. After another furlong Cabana led by a length from Lay Off, but going to the half-mfie he increased his lead to six lengths, Shangola moving into second place ahead of Abba and Indian Scholar, which was fast improving his position. Indian Scholar was just about to move into second place when he blundered at the second last jump, dropping his rider. Shangola reduced Cabana’s lead to two lengths on the home turn, but he could not match the Hawke’s Bay horse for finishing speed. Cabana drew out again and had the race safely won at the last hurdle, though he did not make a good leap there. Cabana established a winning margin of four lengths over the last furlong and Cogitation battled to the post for third, five lengths behind Shangola. Abba was beaten off in fourth place, 20 lengths clear of Cotswold, Then there was another big gap to Lay Off and Colonel Argosy.

Gay Echo’s Success Gay Echo led for the last six furlongs of the Eric Riddiford Steeplechase, drawing 10 lengths clear on the home turn and winning by six lengths from Repayment, which had a keen tussle with Prince Aga and Norfolk Boy. The first jump, the boards near the three furlongs, ended the career of Hormond, runner-up in the Wellington Steeplechase. He crashed heavily, breaking a leg. With half a mile covered Peaseblossom and Fox Fun led from Norfolk Boy, Roman Ned, Repayment, Martial Song, Gay Echo, and The Piper, which were running in close order. Fox Fun went to the front near the mile post running down the back straight for the first time, and led to the stand double for the last time from Norfolk Boy and Peaseblossom. The first fence of fthe double put Personality out of the race. The Wellington Steeplechase winner had jumped well up to that stage, but there he made an error of judgment and came down, checking Boyhood, which was pulled up. Fairhome had lost his rider at the previous fence, the one outside the furlong. Starting the last mile Norfolk Boy was two lengths clear of Peaseblossom, whose jumping was poor. Fox Fun, the win favourite, was already beaten, and a few furlongs later he was pulled up. Gay Echo ran through to take charge at the six furlongs and went to the halfmile four lengths clear of Norfolk Boy, Peaseblossom and Repayment were following at the same intervals and Prince Aga was close by. Gay Echo led round the home turn by 10 lengths and she had the race safely won at the last fence, where she was six lengths clear. Repayment beat Prince Aga by half a length for second, Norfolk Boy was a neck back fourth, and eight lengths clear of Peaseblossom, Count Minerva, Savile Row, and The Piper were the only others to finish, and they straggled home well back. Roman Ned and Martial Song were pulled up on the last round. Won Narrowly but Well Topmast, after being in one of the trailing positions for the first mile, reached the front on the home turn in the Winter Oats and stalled off a bold challenge from the South Islander, Royal Voyage, winning by a head. Deb finished very strongly from well back in the field for third two and a half lengths behind Royal Voyage. \ The Riccarton jockey, A. J. Stokes, got Topmast out smartly and at the half-mile the Hastings-trained Timanova gelding was trailing Argument. Lands End ran to the front inside the next furlong and drew two lengths clear going to the halfmile, where Brutus was alongside Topmast and Sonloch, Argument, Spiron. Young Beau, and Beau Coeur were closest of the others. There Royal Voyage was three places further back and Vitalogy had droped back through the field after moving up on the inner to be close to the pacemaker near the six furlongs. Topmast had Lands End’s measure racing to the home turn, where Keith dashed forward on the outer. Spiron, Young Beau, Royal Voyage, and Golden Coronach were also moving into better positions. Topmast had Keith beaten at the furlong, but had to be kept going when Royal Voyage challenged strongly soon after. He responded quickly when Stokes pulled the whip on him near the post, going on for a narrow but rather decisive win. Spiron beat Sonloch by half a length for third. Young Beau making up ground for fifth a length back. Brutus was sixth, and Golden Coronach, Keith, Cartaphilus, and The Bat were next. Results:— • TALAVERA HURDLES HANDICAP, Of £9OO.
