WINTER COMPETITIONS CONTINUED A cold cross-court wind made play difficult when the winter tennis competitions were continued at Wilding Park on Saturday. Results:— Linwood v. Avonside Singles.—A. D. Huston beat G. A. Poice, 6-1, 6-3; D. G. Huston beat F. Commons, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1; G. Baker lost to T. Wilkins, 1-6, 2-6; W. J. Stance lost to B. Perreau, 4-6, 6-3, 1-6. Doubles'.—D. G. Huston and Baker beat Commons and Wilkins, 6-1, 6-4; A. D. Huston and Spence beat Poice and Perreau, 6-3, 9-7. Linwood won by 4 matches to 2. Woolston v. Linwood Avenue Singles.—M. Agar beat H. Blackburn, 6-0, 6-0; M. Mahar beat T. Rogal, 6-3, 6-3; B. Barron beat J. Southam, 6-3, 6-0. Doubles.—Agar and Mahar beat Blackburn and Rogal, 6-3, 6-2; Barron and Mahar beat Southam and Giles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Woolston won by 5 matches to 1. North Linwood v. Opawa Singles.—B. R. Crawford lost to D. B. Reid, 5-7, 7-9; E. S. Cormack beat J. Crewe, 6-3, 6-2; M. J. Beatty beat W. D. Rawlings, 6-1, 6-1; M. Kelly beat J. Dykes, 7-5, 6-1. Doubles.—Crawford and Cormack beat Reid and Crewe, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3; Beatty and Kelly beat Rawlings and Dykes, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. North Linwood won by 5 matches to 1. Canterbury College v. THREE AUSTRALIANS IN DOUBLES FINAL
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) GENEVA. July 11. Ken Rosewall and Rex Hartwig entered the final of the men’s doubles In the Swiss tennis championships today, beating South Africa’s lan Vermaak and Bryan Waodroffe, 9-7, 12-10, 6-3, in their semi-final.
A crowd of more than 500 saw some of the best tennis the tournament has produced so far, with sparkling net play. In the first two sets the young South Africans, both more than 6ft tall, dominated the net play. Only the Australians’ superior passing shots earned them the victory.
Rosewall and Hartwig will meet Australia’s Mervyn Rose and America’s Hugh Hiwat in the final. Rose and Stewart beat the Italians, Fachini and Pietrangeli, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, 8-6, in the other semi-final. Rosewall was surprisingly beaten by Wladimir Skonecki, a Polish Davis Cup player, in a men’s singles semi-final. Skonecki won in five sets, 6-0, 6-2, 0-6, 1-6. 6-3. Rosewall, who was favourite to take the men’s singles, did not win a game until the first of the second set, when he took his own service.
EUROPEAN ZONE OF DAVIS CUP

Italy enlivened the Davis Cup European zone semi-final against Belgium in Brussels today when Guiseppe Merlo (Italy) beat Jackie Brichant (Belgium), 4-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, in a match halted by darkness yesterday. In Paris, Denmark leads France by two matches to one in their semi-final. In a doubles match today, Kurt Nielsen and Torben Ulrich (Denmark) beat Paul Remy and Jean Ducos de la Haille (France), 0-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 8-6.
A message from Vancouver says the United States eliminated Japan in the first round of the North American zone of the Davis Cup yesterday. Tom Brown an< Tony Trabert defeated Kosei Kamo and Atsushi Miyagi, 6-2, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, in a doubles match which gave the United States a lead of three matches to none.
Trabert and Ham Richardson won the singles matches yesterday.
Brown and Trabert showed too much power, and the Japanese players appeared too tense, and made frequent errors.
