OBITUARY

MR J. MOORHEAD

One of the best-known residents of the Southbridge district, Mr James Moorhead, died recently. He was aged 80.

He was the only son of the late Mr and Mrs Michael Moorhead, who arrived in New Zealand by the sailing vessel Mystery in 1863. He was born in 1873 in a sod hut on the farm at Southbridge known as “Maymore,” which, on the death of his father, he conducted until 1920, when he acquired the well-known Willisden estate at Southbridge. Later he bought an adjoining property known as “Holly Farm.” He carried on mixed farming until his retirement in 1945, when he took up residence in the Southbridge town district. Mr Moorhead was on 2 of the oldest members of the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association and attended every show held by the association since his early boyhood. For more than 50 years he acted as a class steward at the show. He was also keenly interested in horticulture and for many years was one of the most successful exhibitors at the Southbridge Horticultural Society’s exhibition, winning many trophies. A life-long member of St. James’ Anglican Church, he served on the vestry for a number of years. He was also very interested in sport and gave good support to district clubs. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs J. H. Hurford and Miss Martha Moorhead, and two sons, Messrs J. H. M. and W. E. Moorhead.
