UNREST IN EAST BERLIN

Shots Fired At Man On Border (Rec. 10 p.m.) BERLIN, July 10. An East Berlin police border patrol last night fired two shots which wounded a man standing on West Berlin territory close to the border, West Berlin police said today. The police reported this as the only incident since the East German blockade along the 70-miles city border between the East and West sectors* of the city was raised 24 hours’ ago. They said the man was a refugee from East Germany who fled to the West earlier this year. Shots were fired at the man after he had spoken to a police patrol. He was wounded in the left arm and taken to hospital. East Berlin police headquarters said that the man had tried to persuade the patrol to lay down its arms and flee to the West. Life in the city was again normal for the first time since the antiCommunist riots in East Berlin on June 17. No demonstrators or strikers were reported from the East sector and Berliners were once again more able to move freely throughout. all four sectors, the West Berlin police said. * Trade union officials in West Berlin, however, said that there was still a goslow movement in most East German factories. East Berliners said that strong police patrols with tommy guns were guarding government buildings in their sector, and several lorries with Russian soldiers were seen driving through the main streets.
