STARTING GATES
CONFERENCE PRESIDENT’S OPINIONS “The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, July 10. During the season, a new type of starting gate, with an electric release, had been tried out in the Waikato district, and an electric release had been fitted to one of the types of stalls already operating, said the president of the New Zealand Racing Conference (Mr H. R. Chalmers) in his report to, its annual meeting at Wellington today. “I was not able to see either gate in operation but press reports would indicate that there must be some improvement before either type of release can be used with confidence,” he said. “One must realise that starting stalls have come to stay, but I cannot say that I am wholly* in favour of them,” he continued. "It has always seemed to me that if trainers gave their horses, and particularly young horses, plenty of barrier practice, and if starters were to be given complete freedom, there would be no need for stalls.
“The strain of starting from q standing start in stalls must be very great on a young horse, and, to my mind, a horse must be better balanced when on the move than when flat-footed. However. I realise that the majority of the Racing Conference representatives do not agree with me,” he said.
