OBITUARY
CAPTAIN D. R. PATERSON (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 29. Well known in shipping services throughout New Zealand, Captain Donald Rayner Paterson died yesterday at Rotorua after h long illness.. He was 61.
Captain Paterson, who retired in 1951 after having served nearly 37 years with the Shell Company, started his maritime career in 1907 as a cadet •in the training ship Conway. After working in both sailing vessels and steamships he joined the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company in 1914, and during the First World War served in several overseas Shell tankers. After the war Captain Paterson took over the command of the motor-vessel Paua on her arrival in New Zealand from the English shipyards. He later commanded the Tanea. Captain Paterson, who was an active member of the Merchant Service Guild, is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
