CHINESE IN BURMA
Evacuation Plan Approved (Rec. 10 p.m.) BANGKOK, June 23. It was officially announced today through the American Embassy that an evacuation plan for the Chinese Nationalist troops in Burma to Formosa had been agreed upon by a four-nation committee sitting in Bangkok since May 22. The evacuation plan includes: z (1) The evacuation of Kuomintang troops from north-eastefn Burma by air to Siam, then to Formosa. (2) Troops in other southern localities will be evacuated by road to a safety zone established around Tacheliek, thence to northern Siam, and flown directly to Formosa or moved by road and rail to Bangkok, then flown to Formosa. (3) Other troops in the Tennasarim area will be evacuated to the nearest transport point, thence by air to either Bangkok or Chiengmai and on to Formosa. Upon approval of the plan by the Governments concerned it is hoped that the actual evacuation will commence and will be supervised by the joint four-nation committee, comprising representatives of Siam. Burma, Nationalist China, and the United States.
Chief of Staff in Europe.— Mr Eisenhower today nominated Major-General Cortlandt Van Rensslaer Schuyler to be Chief of Staff of the European Defence Forces under General Alfred Gruenther. General Schuyler has been commanding the United States 28th Division in Europe.—Washington. June 22. Jehovah’s Witnesses’ Conference.— Thirty-three delegates from New Zealand and Australia arrived in New York today for the New World Society Assembly of Jehovah’s Witnesses to be held between July 19 and July 26. The delegation was headed by Mr L. G. Pope, of New Zealand.—New York, June 22,
